Trying to update win 10 home to insider preview to run emulator

So i bought an HP and i got win home on it. I am trying to update that to win 10 pro so i can run the emulator.

I heard that windows insider preview program will allow me to run the Hyper-V and whatever else emulator needs. Is that correct?

So im doing the update but it is forever stuck at 32%. I have googled around and tried various work throughs but to no avail.

So just want confirmation this 'upgrade' path is possible to get Home to Insider and thus do hololens emulator work

    To update to Windows 10 Professional from home you must buy license from Windows Store but first you need to check on internet that your pc BIOS supports SLAT and Virtual process on your HP laptop. It probably will its recent.
    You can get Win Pro clean load, but this only lasts 90 days, though you may continue to use this if its constantly updated. However it will never be activated and MSA information cannot be modified, like computer name etc

    @holovr I'd be interested in hearing how your setup goes - I recently purchased a desktop HP Pavilion 550-149, 3.50GHz 4th Generation Intel® Core™ i5-4690 Processor, 12GB RAM.

    I upgraded from Win 10 Home to Win 10 Pro (purchased license) for my local machine but then in my VM I have been using the Win Pro 90 day trial version.

    I had to upgrade the wireless Broadcom network adapter that came with the computer as my external network switch could not maintain a stable internet connection long enough to install any of the tools. After upgrading the wireless network adapter, my internet connection was maintained in the vm and I was able to install all tools.

    I then ran into issues (HyperV Management Services) with the HoloLens Emulator when trying to deploy the HelloHolograms app from Visual Studio to the Emulator. This issue I have been unable to resolve although it looks like I can deploy fine from the vm to the actual HoloLens device.

    1- so i have been able to enable virtualization via the bios. Im hoping that means SLAT and Virtual process support.

    3- so to be clear. if i get windows insider preview version installed, will this let me run the emulator or must i still buy a pro license?

    4-with route 2, you are saying i can demo win 10 pro for 90 days? but what do you mean it will never be activated. what is pro/con to that?

    i can eventually buy pro but id like to know for sure everything will install and run and i can use the emulator on this HP i just bought

    sounds like we have the same kind of machine. Got it for VR and hope to use it for hololens.

    I found the setting in BIOS to enable virtualization thanks for that.

    Emulator install still fails despite doing that

    @holovr,
    I'm pretty sure that you will need to update to Windows 10 Pro edition to get the emulator to work. Take a look at the system requirements page.

    The Windows Insider program will grant you access to updates that are not available to the normal public (pre-release software), but it will not change which version of the OS you are running, so it won't give you the ability to run Hyper-V if your system does not already support it.

    @holovr If the emulator fails, check your network switch as it could be disconnecting. I kept having software installation problems in the vm prior to having to upgrade from the default Broadcom network adapter that came with the machine. I could not maintain a stable internet connection long enough to download and install the software.

    Follow this thread here to learn more of some of my process problems along the way:

    I haven't had a chance to continue troubleshooting the Emulator as I just received the device a few days ago and have spent my time learning and experiencing the device.

    I can deploy apps to the HoloLens directly (both HelloHolograms and Origami) but not to the Emulator.

    @holovr Windows 10 Activation is described in detail at you-do-not-need-activate-windows-10 but it helps
