purchased a mixed reality vr headset, controllers work but can't do the headset tracking set up. Is a 7th gen cpu completely required to run the headset? We have an i7 but its not 7th gen and not 10 years old either.

I'd suggest you use Windows Mixed Reality PC Check app to see if your computer can support Windows Mixed Reality first.
