HoloLens USB APIs broken?

I've been trying to build and run the UWP sample app "DeviceEnumerationAndPairing" (https://github.com/Microsoft/Windows-universal-samples/tree/master/Samples/DeviceEnumerationAndPairing) on the HoloLens. It doesn't work - crashes when trying to run the first scenario - seems like the API is broken?

Has anyone tried programatically accessing a device attached to the HoloLens USB? Maybe it's an unsupported operation, but I can't see why that should be. I'd have thought that hooking up USB devices to a HoloLens would be a pretty obvious use case...?
