How to do translucent rendering?

Hi,
I am wondering how to reach the translucent result as shown in the attached image.
I think the skull is rendered with a volume rendering and the skin is rendered with a surface rendering with a opacity value less than 1.0.

Can anybody give me some suggestion on how to reach this kind of effect?

Many thanks.

YL
