How to get access to the Holographic Space from a 2D windows universal app?

Seems like there is no way to interact with 3d models and a 2D window at the same time. However, the Holograms app in the hololens does a similar job. Can someone explain how does the Holograms application is developed to achieve this ?

@andnovar I've asked this question before as well. Holograms is probably a DirectX or a WPF app that programmatically creates multiple views.

Here's an indication that this feature request is getting some love:

Holograms app uses private API's that are not available to mere mortals like us (yet)
at this moment it is not possible to create an app that uses the "shell" volumetric space which is where all 2D apps live.

@AlexD Have you checked that Holograms is actually a Unity app? I guess one can run dependency walker to find out the set of DLLs it's linking to, but I haven't tried.
