Can anyone elaborate on this technique a bit more for creating negative shadows?

I think understand the concept, but not sure how to actually do it. I'm assuming the shadow is not attached to the modeled object but is an effect applied to the bottom of the placed object

Many designers have found that they can even more believably integrate holograms by creating a "negative shadow" on the surface that the hologram is sitting on. They do this by creating a soft glow on the ground around the hologram and then subtracting the "shadow" from the glow. The soft glow integrates with the light from the real world and the shadow grounds the hologram in the environment.

    If I'm understanding correctly, try a simple sample scene:

    Put in a floor. Black (which renders transparent), but make sure it's also somewhat shiny. This will reflect light rendered in scene, and the reflection show as a brighter patch in the HL.

    Make sure there's a point light or directional light getting reflected by the floor.

    Put a small primitive between the light and the floor. This should cast a shadow onto the floor reflection, creating a dark patch.
