Hello everyone.

The Mixed Reality Forums here are no longer being used or maintained.

There are a few other places we would like to direct you to for support, both from Microsoft and from the community.

The first way we want to connect with you is our mixed reality developer program, which you can sign up for at https://aka.ms/IWantMR.

For technical questions, please use Stack Overflow, and tag your questions using either hololens or windows-mixed-reality.

If you want to join in discussions, please do so in the HoloDevelopers Slack, which you can join by going to https://aka.ms/holodevelopers, or in our Microsoft Tech Communities forums at https://techcommunity.microsoft.com/t5/mixed-reality/ct-p/MicrosoftMixedReality.

And always feel free to hit us up on Twitter @MxdRealityDev.

@pkrasam based on the instructions from the companion app that come up when you click on the "add" device button, I would say yes that the PC running the companion app and the HoloLens need to both be communicating with a common wireless network.

I have noticed however that when I go to different locations and connect both my PC and the same HoloLens devices to another network, the companion app seems to be smart enough to figure things out and recognizes the HoloLens over the different network.

I'm not on the HoloLens team so this is not an official answer, but based on my own experience they don't technically have to be on the same physical network as long as there is a route between the two. For example, the HoloLens can be on a wireless network and the PC can be on Ethernet as long as they are connected to the same router. Or theoretically the PC could be connected to the network over VPN as long as there aren't restrictions on data routing over the VPN. Obviously remote network configurations may impact streaming performance. Maybe we should ask what you're trying to accomplish?
