Hello everyone.

The Mixed Reality Forums here are no longer being used or maintained.

There are a few other places we would like to direct you to for support, both from Microsoft and from the community.

The first way we want to connect with you is our mixed reality developer program, which you can sign up for at https://aka.ms/IWantMR.

For technical questions, please use Stack Overflow, and tag your questions using either hololens or windows-mixed-reality.

If you want to join in discussions, please do so in the HoloDevelopers Slack, which you can join by going to https://aka.ms/holodevelopers, or in our Microsoft Tech Communities forums at https://techcommunity.microsoft.com/t5/mixed-reality/ct-p/MicrosoftMixedReality.

And always feel free to hit us up on Twitter @MxdRealityDev.

Is it possible to add an external microphone to Hololens?

I have an application that represents different holograms and I need to narrate on them while recording them, using Hololens's built in recording system. However, the sound quality is not good enough and the mic captures the ambience. I tried head set on the AUX jack but Hololens still uses its own mic. Is there any possible way to connect an external mic to Hololens. And if the way I am recording is not right, please let me know how should I improve it.

Special thanks

There are four mics on the HoloLens, two of which target the users speech and two others that target the environment.

You might be abe to get a cleaner capture if you focus just on the user focused mics. For more information about audio on HoloLens, I highly recommend Joe Kelly's recent talk on the subject (his talk starts around the 42:25 mark).

However, if your goal is to record audio to use in your application there might be some simple and more appropriate means on doing so. For example, Zoom makes some great portable audio recording devices that would likely give you much better control over your audio recordings.
