What is happening with background communication ?

Hi, according to the presentation on the Build HoloLens is allowing to run one app at a time. Does it mean that when I have Skype and Edge and Mail pinned in my room and currently I'm using Edge I won't receive notice about new mail and/or about new call/conversation from skype ? As far as I know they are suspended but does it mean that the visual aspect of the is stoped (for example no information update) or they are not working at all ?

Currently live tile support is limited, as seen on this page. Specifically, "However, we will only use the medium Tile for the Start menu and apps will be represented in the world as secondary tiles drawn with the static splash screen specified in your app".

If you would like this to be improved, please provide feedback through the Windows Feedback app.

  • @andrha you misunderstood me. I'm not asking about live tiles but about the lifecycle of the application. For example if you have your skype turned on your mobile than even if you`re using web browser and someone is writing to you, you will get the notification. How does it look on hololens. Is the app totally suspended so you will receive no info ? or maybe only there is no live tiles etc ?

  • @andrha thx I had to missunderstand that part

The interesting part is while your app is running you can subscribe to PushNotificationReceived event on PushNotificationChannel and do some stuff with your UI if you want (that's my plan for now).

@andrha is there any way we can use the Extensibility APIs to detect that notifications are disabled for the Holographic platform?

  • Ive had cortana inform me of a skype call while using another app on the hololens, so something it is possible.

  • @jboulanger Skype has been specially designed for this to enable outgoing and incoming calls while the app is not active. Notifications themselves are still not supported.

@bc3tech That sounds like it should be possible. I'll follow up with the team to get a more definitive answer.
