Hello everyone.
The Mixed Reality Forums here are no longer being used or maintained.
There are a few other places we would like to direct you to for support, both from Microsoft and from the community.
The first way we want to connect with you is our mixed reality developer program, which you can sign up for at https://aka.ms/IWantMR.
For technical questions, please use Stack Overflow, and tag your questions using either hololens or windows-mixed-reality.
If you want to join in discussions, please do so in the HoloDevelopers Slack, which you can join by going to https://aka.ms/holodevelopers, or in our Microsoft Tech Communities forums at https://techcommunity.microsoft.com/t5/mixed-reality/ct-p/MicrosoftMixedReality.
And always feel free to hit us up on Twitter @MxdRealityDev.

Objects without Unity?
I haven't been able to get past the DEP6100 error I mentioned in my other post
However, in the meantime I am curious. Is it necessary to go through Unity to get 3d objects to display in the Hololens? I am trying to convert existing AutoCAD and Revit models to be viewed in Hololens.
It is easy enough to convert these entities standard 3d solid file formats (IGES, STEP), but it seems in the reading I've done I'd need to convert them to Mesh objects to get them in Unity.
Can't I bypass Unity and work with these objects directly in a Hololens application?
On another note, Wave 1, sure hope I can get my environment up to speed before the hardware gets

For 3D without Unity check into the DirectX alternative.

There appears to be an answer at http://answers.unity3d.com/questions/414816/import-cad-models-into-unity.html
Basically 3D max? does a conversion
You have to convert DirectX11 Colour tables to AutoCAD colour tables, just not simple in 3D template supplied in VS 2015 for holographic work
