Hello everyone.

The Mixed Reality Forums here are no longer being used or maintained.

There are a few other places we would like to direct you to for support, both from Microsoft and from the community.

The first way we want to connect with you is our mixed reality developer program, which you can sign up for at https://aka.ms/IWantMR.

For technical questions, please use Stack Overflow, and tag your questions using either hololens or windows-mixed-reality.

If you want to join in discussions, please do so in the HoloDevelopers Slack, which you can join by going to https://aka.ms/holodevelopers, or in our Microsoft Tech Communities forums at https://techcommunity.microsoft.com/t5/mixed-reality/ct-p/MicrosoftMixedReality.

And always feel free to hit us up on Twitter @MxdRealityDev.

Hololens v2 cancelled? Next version in 2019?

I've just read this en Endgadget:
https://www.engadget.com/2017/02/20/next-gen-hololens-2019/

Is there any confirmation of this? Any information?

  • I hope this is not the case. 2015 to 2019 is a four year product cycle which seems unrealistically long. If this is the case, lowering the price of the current version to be similar to a surface pro tablet (or iPad, or ODG glasses) would be in order to widen the market. HoloLens really is quite good and a unique offering with its spatial mapping, rock solid sharp display, and MS operating system combined.

I have no connection with any Microsoft "politics".
The launch of Holographic "Occluded" headsets HMD is coming in a few months time at 10% price of original HoloLens, will probably take up all the production capacity

Further to this Xbox Project Scorpion is launching which will inevitably be with HMD support as Sony is storming away with PSVR.

HoloLens has always been a developers research project, with a 4 year timescale not unlike a PHD dissertation course.

The market moves so fast now, oh Augmented Reality (AR) and VR have entered mainstream tech language in under a year.

IMHO this is a sensible move, especially those who invested thousands in the current technology.

I worked in a US computer company who were forced to dump the new line as it was so far behind, and hence the company!, should have waited and jumped to next generation and listened to feedback!!!.

Do you wait for the older late bus?, no just jump on the latest newest bus.

  • On balance I think this is a good thing.

From what I could tell on the leaks around V2 there were very few improvements over V1 so it would be of limited value releasing it. All that would end up happening is us developers would have to shell out another $3,000 to make sure our existing software works on the new version!

Also, lets face it Microsoft has no competition in the MR space so that might as well invest their time into a significant version update rather than an incremental one.

  • It makes sense for the reasons outlined above (when they're this far ahead of everyone else they can take the time to get it right for the next gen). Added bonus is that our units will remain current for another 2 years! :) That's pretty rare these days.

Also it has to be said that as a first-gen dev kit it is already far more polished and supported with software than you would normally expect (look at Oculus Rift DK1 for comparison) - this already feels like a V2 device.
