Spatial Mapping internet

Why do we need internet access in new environments for the spatial mapping to work?
I'm currently writing my thesis and my prof is surprised (I was as well in the past) to read this fact.
Also, will this change in the future?

Just a guess, but the HoloLens doesn't have a GPS chip. Spatial Mapping needs location information, however, in order find your "room" again in future passes, so it may use IP geolocation, in lieu of GPS tracking, to do this.

Still it doesn't make sense, why can't the device computate the spatial mapping from scratch when no Internet access is available.

Network access is not required for spatial mapping. Try for yourself. Disconnect from all networks in settings and then go somewhere you haven't been before. Air tap on something to visualize the spatial map of the new area.
