Hello everyone.

The Mixed Reality Forums here are no longer being used or maintained.

There are a few other places we would like to direct you to for support, both from Microsoft and from the community.

The first way we want to connect with you is our mixed reality developer program, which you can sign up for at https://aka.ms/IWantMR.

For technical questions, please use Stack Overflow, and tag your questions using either hololens or windows-mixed-reality.

If you want to join in discussions, please do so in the HoloDevelopers Slack, which you can join by going to https://aka.ms/holodevelopers, or in our Microsoft Tech Communities forums at https://techcommunity.microsoft.com/t5/mixed-reality/ct-p/MicrosoftMixedReality.

And always feel free to hit us up on Twitter @MxdRealityDev.

Why not have a USB 3.0 input?

I am very interested in using the Hololens to not only augment reality but also augment perception. For example, streaming the output of a thermal imaging camera into the Hololens. The mini-usb 2.0 is only for charging and debugging. Is adding a USB 3.0 super speed port on the list of hardware adds? If not, why not? It seems to be needlessly limiting the possible applications for the Hololens.

I am gonna take a stab here and assume that there are not plans to put USB ports onto this thing in the near future. If you look at MS' design philosophy for such things in recent history, they've been edging towards "hands-free" gestural and speech-driven control. As this seems to also be a product of the Kinect team, I expect nothing different, at least in the near-term. As they try to limit easy accessibility for things like USB peripherals, it will encourage development with the other inputs. That's not to say that you can't still get in by way of WIFI and bluetooth of course, and while those are more limiting obviously, they are still accessible.

The cherry bay trail chipset does not support USB 3.1 iirc. They would have to add a third party controller. My guess is maybe in a future hardware revision if/when they switch away from this Intel chipset. Who knows though with Intel's announcement end of lifing this product line.
