Mixed Reality Minimum Required Inputs

Hello,

We know controllers will be available, but I am guessing they will not be a required.

So, my question is, what's minimum requirement for input? Can we safely develop apps that support keyboard/mouse? Xbox Controller? Or Gaze only (with no button presses)? Or do we need to support an 'all of the above' type of solution for the widest of audience?

Obviously controllers will be great, but for more widely accessible games/apps, what are people assuming the available input types should be?

Thanks
Jeff.

You can use as many or as few inputs as you like.

There are some fundamental things that need to be taken into consideration when making this decision though.

One - Where will a user maybe use the device. If your experience is one designed for the user to always be sitting at their keyboard, then yes, keyboard only could be acceptable. But some users set their PC up in the living room or other areas to play in so that they can take advantage of room-scale, so then having just keyboard might not work out so well.

Two - Futureproofing. Many of us believe that in the next year or two, these devices will connect directly to an Xbox to drive them. At that point, keyboard entry may or may not exist, but if you already have Xbox controller capability built in, then you would be safe once that platform is available as well.

Three - Voice is an option, however not all headsets (or any at this point) have built in microphones. So voice right now is hit or miss.

Four - Motion Controllers are going to be huge, and they really do make the experience much better from my experience with other platforms. But I would not make something that only works with them either. There are always going to be use cases for different input types.
