What is error 2181038087-5?

JeremyJeremy
edited November 2017 in Troubleshooting

I have been trying to get an Acer Mixed Reality headset working with SteamVR and now just in general but now keep getting the error code 2181038087-5. I've tried uninstalling the device and installing it all again but haven't had any luck. Can anyone shed some light on what the error is/means?

This was working previously with just the baseline Mixed Reality Portal app, but since attempting to setup compatibility with SteamVR and joining the Windows Insider program it appears to have broken the headset.

    Hi @Jeremy
Whilst installing a new NVidia GT 1050 graphics card this error code 2181038087-5 showed up on the Mixed Reality (MR) Portal when connecting any WMR headset.

After putting the original graphic card back :s , the error was still there! :'(

    WORKAROUND

Pulled the USB 3.0 Headset cable from the Current socket and looked for USB 3.0 socket nearby with the blue insert.

Pushed the USB 3.0 Headset plug in the socket, there was the new device detection bell/bong sound and the MR Portal immediately started to work.

The really weird thing was found upgrading to NVidia GT 1050 graphics card after pulling the mains power cord from socket to put back on the right part of desk. Restart Windows 10 PC and MR Portal gives error code 2181038087-7

Tried the same workaround as above and this worked again.
When looking in Device Manager this appears to be a problem with the USB 3.0 Enumeration which changes to mapping of the port.

Running DXDIAG, gives little more information, so looks like changing the port the WMR Headset is connected, hot swap seems to be workaround, but not solve the USB 3.0 driver problem.

Same error message here. Hot swap worked once (after numerous attempts suddenly I heard the device detected sound and it worked this one time. Since then I tried countless times with no luck. This POS goes back to vendor.

Why is this thread even marked as "Answered"? Neither is there information about what the error means nor a helpful reply concerning a solution. Hot swap does work in the least of cases, say 1 out of 100 times (if at all) and even if it worked more often it hardly seems a solution. By now I un/re-plugged so often that I just wonder whether the plug or the slot will break first.

Some kind of reaction by someone would already help, even if only mentally. I do feel completely left alone with this. The one-way channel that is the feedback hub doesn't help with this feeling either, like shouting into a desert.

Same error here, HP Mixed Reality headset, 1060-equipped laptop.

When I don't get this error the MR display stays blank :-/

Maybe not very helpful for some, but the official clarification can be found on this page: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/mixed-reality/enthusiast-guide/troubleshooting-windows-mixed-reality
