Useful physical modifications to the HoloLens?
I wanted to share a couple of physical 'modifications' to the HoloLens hardware that have been useful for my projects, and wanted to see if anyone else had suggestions of things that were helpful for them.
I am currently investigating using the HoloLens in an operating room. Because the lights in an OR are so bright, it is difficult to see any holograms on the HoloLens. I found that placing a sheet of tinted plastic vinyl ( https://www.amazon.com/Gauge-Smoke-Tinted-Plastic-Fabric/dp/B0759S4PXC/ref=sr_1_177?ie=UTF8&qid=1507231020&sr=8-177&keywords=flexible+tinted ) over the headset glass helped darken the real-world view enough that holograms were visible, without making the background too dark.
When the vinyl covers the cameras on the HoloLens, the HoloLens can still do positional tracking, but hand gestures cannot be interpreted -- in our use case that is actually a plus because we can keep the user from accidentally 'blooming' and closing our app.
Another issue I found is that when demoing the HoloLens to inexperienced users, they will often accidentally press the buttons on the HoloLens when trying to adjust it on their head. This can sometimes affect volume, brightness, or even the execution of the app you want to demo. You can mitigate this issue by getting some rubber O-rings with an internal diameter of 1/4-inch (6mm), placing the O-rings over the buttons, and then taping over it with electrical tape. The result is that the average user won't accidentally press the buttons when adjusting the headset, but if you need to you can still press the buttons with the tip of a fingernail.
