Is i5-4200h CPU enough for the HoloLens emulator ?

Hello everyone,

I have an Intel Core i5-4200H with only 2 physical cores and 4 logical. In the requirements, it is said that I need 4 cores but it is not precised if they are physical or logical. Can you help me please ?

Else I have 12 GB of RAM and Windows 10 Pro.

Thank you

  • @SamSky I am not a member of the Microsoft organization but the support guidelines require i5 7200 or greater at the minimum for Mixed Reality PCs. This is a 2 core (4 threads) processor. If you want Ultra PC performance you need i5 4590 or greater (quad core, 8 threads). Check Intel site for specs.

The official position is https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/mixed-reality/enthusiast-guide/windows-mixed-reality-minimum-pc-hardware-compatibility-guidelines. In addition you need Intel Graphics 620 or greater.
There is also an insistence that your drivers must support WDDM 2.2 or higher.
You need to be running the Fall Creators Edition of Windows 10.

Having said that, I am one of those IT old guys that run MR Portal & software on non approved hardware (Surface Pro 4 i7 16GB 256B SSD)… (2 core 4 threads) unit with Intel Iris 540 Graphics running WDDM 2.1 graphic drivers. There is display flicker, black screen issues from time to time with my CPU & GPU runs in the 42 - 55 % utilization range implying ability to support the technology but the experience is not optimum.

The older processors do not support WDDM 2.1 and this may be the cause of some display issues. I have raised that issue of support to the highest levels of Microsoft and am awaiting a reply.

My advice is, if you can afford it, purchase a MR headset and try to run it on your system, the experience provides an understanding of what the "interactive visual computing environment without monitor & keyboards" will be like by 2020. I am enjoying the experience and building a design concept of the future of training in this age.

Have you run the Windows Mixed Reality PC Check? …. what was the result?... how incompatible are you?

Hope my comments have helped somewhat.

  • Yes thank you ! I ran the Windows Mixed Reality PC Check and the only problem is WDDM 2.2 which is not supported.

  • I run Emulator on my laptop which is not at all powerful.
    My specs are
    Core i3, dual core 2.2Ghz
    12GB RAM
    Intel 500 series internal graphics
    Windows 10 education.

    And it runs pretty well!
