Anyone on the HoloLens team care to elaborate on the answer he gave saying light points per radian is more important than Field of View? I'm still a bit confused about the difference between light points and pixels as it relates to the HoloLens display tech.

    Hey Bryan,

    I'm still a little shaky on the difference myself, but Ashraf Michail (Software Architect on the HoloLens team) provided a basic explanation of the terms that has helped my understanding.

    Explanation of terms

    Light Point
    A single point of light emitted through the projection system and wave guide to appear at a fixed distance in your world
    Holographic Resolution
    Total number of light points emitted
    Holographic Density
    Minimum number of lights points per radian

    How pixels relate to light points

    A reprojection process maps pixels to light points to ensure accurate and low latency display of holographic objects in your world.

    We publish rendered pixel count and light point count separately because they are different counts which both contribute to hologram quality. HoloLens uses more light points than rendered pixels to produce a more accurate hologram projection.

    @Dave_W , yeah. it's more than we've ever gotten, but it still doesn't really make a lot of sense -- maybe because it's all so new. maybe because I'm too dumb to grasp it.

    Thanks, @Dave_W. Yeah, I saw that earlier (you may have noticed he replied to one of my questions in that thread). Still not totally understanding the display tech and how light points relate to pixels. Specifically this part of @Ashraf_Michail 's explanation leaves me scratching my head:

    HoloLens uses more light points than rendered pixels to produce a more accurate hologram projection.

    It was clearly an answer designed to confuse people, but I call bull on the answer.
    It was like saying my 1" TV isn't small, because it's a 4K TV, so it doesn't matter. Fair enough... I can see holograms fairly detailed from a big distance, but I need a big room to walk far enough away from them to see them in full size.

    The field of view is too annoyingly small. I just wish Microsoft would be more open about it and just say "yes, we know, and we're looking into improving it in future versions". If they could just say that, we could move on and focus on all the amazing other things that it has. Because honestly every other bit is great, but all we now talk about is the FoV.

    They know. They're working on it. So... let's move on and focus on building great holographic apps!
