Hello everyone.

The Mixed Reality Forums here are no longer being used or maintained.

There are a few other places we would like to direct you to for support, both from Microsoft and from the community.

The first way we want to connect with you is our mixed reality developer program, which you can sign up for at https://aka.ms/IWantMR.

For technical questions, please use Stack Overflow, and tag your questions using either hololens or windows-mixed-reality.

If you want to join in discussions, please do so in the HoloDevelopers Slack, which you can join by going to https://aka.ms/holodevelopers, or in our Microsoft Tech Communities forums at https://techcommunity.microsoft.com/t5/mixed-reality/ct-p/MicrosoftMixedReality.

And always feel free to hit us up on Twitter @MxdRealityDev.

Announcing Spectator View

When wearing a mixed reality headset, we often forget that a person who does not have it on is unable to experience the wonders that we can. Today, we are pleased to share our Spectator View solution with you. Spectator view allows others to see on a 2D screen what a HoloLens user sees in their world.  Spectator view is a preferred approach for live demonstrations of your HoloLens experience because you can use a high-quality video camera to produce high-quality images meant for a big screen. Spectator view gives you the flexibility to choose the camera, lens, and framing that best suits how you want to showcase your app. It puts you in control of the video quality based on the video hardware you have available.

Documentation for Spectator View can be found at:
https://developer.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/holographic/spectator_view

You can clone the repository from:
https://github.com/Microsoft/HoloLensCompanionKit/tree/master/SpectatorView

We trust you will find this useful and welcome your feedback & contributions.
Thanks!

  • Awesome! Been patiently waiting for this since I saw it announced at Unite'16. I'll be trying it out with a Canon EOS 5D Mark III.

  • This is great news! Will experiment with it.

  • @JayAb we are using spectator view for our customer(Porsche)'s project - there're quite a few bugs and issues in the code. Is github the best place to report them?

  • @Jackson Just sent a few ones on your way :). Some can be seen as doc bugs, or maybe feature requests. We are partnering with China Central Television to use it for mixed reality TV broadcasting so you may be bombed with tons of feature requests later... :)

  • I don't want to look a gift horse in the mouth as I am very excited Spectator View is becoming more easily available, but I really want to move the camera to show off the 3D aspect of my applications.

Is there a way to inquire and/or hire someone to do the version Microsoft uses at presentations -- using a genlock signal thus allowing the camera to be moved on a Steadicam or dolly?

I own an Alexa Mini, Red Epic Dragon, as well as two Hololenses if that is helpful.

    Thanks much!

  • @ChaseBowman how about the mini convertors from black magic design?

  • @DataMesh what are the black magic mini converters? Do they provide a genlock signal?

  • @ChaseBowman https://www.blackmagicdesign.com/products/decklink/models DeckLink 4k Extreme does take genlock. Haven't tried one yet, but could be a start... We will experiment with it later anyway. Not quite sure if ms folks will publish everything in time...

  • @DataMesh Awesome thanks!! I'm fully ready to invest in doing this right. Let me know how it goes. Where you based?

  • @ChaseBowman we have offices in Beijing and Redmond.

  • Will spectator view work with the cheaper third party mixed reality headsets coming out soon, or do I really have to drop another three thousand bucks?

Mixed Reality Headsets are Occluded, that's blind or blank, in simple terms. So they simply cannot be calibrated against a real camera, like GoPro Hero 4 Black.

@DataMesh @ChaseBowman this is exactly the question that brought me here. Any luck with GenLock?
