For technical questions, please use Stack Overflow, and tag your questions using either hololens or windows-mixed-reality.

If you want to join in discussions, please do so in the HoloDevelopers Slack, which you can join by going to https://aka.ms/holodevelopers, or in our Microsoft Tech Communities forums at https://techcommunity.microsoft.com/t5/mixed-reality/ct-p/MicrosoftMixedReality.

And always feel free to hit us up on Twitter @MxdRealityDev.

Can we use motion controllers with HoloLens ?

that would be a very cool thing to do, given the input limitations of gestures on HoloLens. and it would open a lot of gaming perspectives.

Hey, I'm a Microsoft Student Partner and a Mixed Reality Project Manager at a game development studio. I'm here to inspire and get inspired. Cheers.

  • Really? Is it limited by the hardware? Meaning, does the Hololens not have the correct inside-out tracking camera? Or is this due to the OS currently running on the HoloLens - Meaning it will work with the new Creators Update?
I'm specifically looking for something to use with the Hololens that can use to get precision positional and rotational data from (ie - I want to use a device of some type to point and shoot, rather than use my fingers.) Any suggestions would be appreciated.

  • @jasonhbartlett - They are not answering that question. But, in my opinion, it would likely take an OS and Firmware update for the HoloLens to work with the motion controllers. I have no idea if/when that might happen. I know lots of people would love to see it happen (myself included!)

  • Earlier this month I asked Alex Kipman about that,
he said not yet, so there is hope.

  • This could be really useful, and I have no doubt it is on the feature list of HoloLens team. Can't wait to see that happen.
