Verified Working Laptops and Configurations for Mixed Reality Devices

edited August 2017 in Q&A and Discussions

I figured we could have a running list of laptops which have been verified to work with both HP and/or Acer MR HMD. This will help people from shelling out tons of money for a laptop by knowing if it doesn't work or not. I would encourage people to keep track of the specs for these devices found here:
https://developer.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/mixed-reality/windows_mixed_reality_minimum_pc_hardware_compatibility_guidelines
And post to this list of any laptops and configurations not quite working.

I'll start.

HP MR HMD
Verified:

  • Asus ROG Gamers Laptop Model # G751J - core i7 - NVidia GTX 970m - 512GB HD - 32GB Ram
  • Surface Pro 3 (slow choppy) - core i7 - Intel HD Graphics 5000 - 256GB SSD - 8GB RAM

Not working:

  • Surface Book (first gen) - USB Driver issues - Surface Book core i7 (first gen) 512GB 16GB RAM

  • I like the idea of this, I just am not sure how realistic this is. It could literally change week to week with different windows builds.

  • Good point. It's an attempt to have a central place to place good configurations for laptops so we can save other peoples pain and checkbooks.

  • There are also different variations of issues.
For example the MRP runs fine on my Asus laptops but the app which I build will not run on it. Either crash or hung.

(The same app runs fine on other computer)
  • Well, I have some fun things to add to this list:

    Surface Book (i7-6600U/NVIDIA 940m equivalent)
Passes all the tests (all green when disabling internal GPU, yellow otherwise)
Unable to install correct USB drivers. Portal will not recognize device at all.

Surface Pro (2017) (i7-7660U / Intel Iris Plus 640) (max spec)
Passes all tests (yellow for CPU and GPU)
Headset installs correctly but the Surface display flashes constantly as soon as headset is fully plugged in (as if it's constantly changing display settings). Sound comes though speakers (not headset). Headset display does not turn on at all.

    Surface Pro 3 (i5-4300U / Intel HD 440)
Fails GPU test. Used registry hack to skip device check.
IT WORKS! Of course, the framefrate is very bad so it's almost unusable, but it totally works. The holographic shell and apps load, tracking is perfect, etc.

Seriously, how is it that my least capable Surface device, the one that is many years old and I had to trick the MR Portal into recognizing, is the only one that works? While the highest-spec Surface devices, which clear the minimum requirements comfortably, have these weird hardware errors?

It's ironic, the more green check marks I have in the device check, the less likely the device will work.

  • I'd be interested to know the registry hack. I have an SB i7 with GTX965 with the USB 3.0 recognition problem but have a unpowered USB 2.0 hub that allows the HP headset to be recognized. Upgraded to the latest NVIDIA drivers which bumped GPU WDDM 2.1 to WDDM 2.2. Also migrated to Insider version 17017. Mixed Reality Portal reports error 1 - must use USB 3.0 connection. So if I can disable USB connection type error the HP headset just might work.

  • It must be a USB 3.0. You can't pass that.
The hack only overrides the first test. If you already passed that, there is no need for the hack.

  • Hi @SteveS,

I am from the Microsoft team. Is your problem listed on the troubleshooting page? (https://developer.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/mixed-reality/troubleshooting_windows_mixed_reality)

I think the registry hack being referenced above is to skip the PC check and is not related to "error 1". There is another workaround specific to the Surface Book for USB, but I'm not confident it is exactly your problem: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/4032123/kinect-sensor-is-not-recognized-on-a-surface-book. Let us know if that works for you.

  • After UsbDriver registry edit mentioned above I can confirm Working:
Surface Book (first gen) - USB Driver issues - Surface Book core i7 (first gen) 512GB 16GB RAM

  • For those interested, I have tested it on two systems with only minor issues.

Alienware 17 (i7-4900MQ, 32GB, GTX780m): no issues at all other than not supported. No registry updated required.*

Dell INSPIRON 7559 ( i7-6700HQ, 8GB, GTX960m): a little slow, needed registry file to run, but very usable.*

    • useable performance wise, but I need to figure out how to get around the view that I am looking through coke bottles.
  • I've got an interesting setup to share. I have a Dell XPS 13 (i5-7200U) with an external gpu (Gigabyte AORUS Gaming Box GTX 1070) connected through thunderbolt 3. The performance is acceptable. It doesnt feel as smooth as a desktop pc (maybe a framrate issue) and it occasionally stutters. The performance issues may be caused by the weaker CPU I have or some limitations with the thunderbolt 3 connection.

  • Anyone got any further with the Surface Pro (2017) (i7-7660U / Intel Iris Plus 640) ?
Any idea why there are yellow test results for CPU and GPU?
Surely MS have tested this hardware combo?

What are you using to connect the Acer HMD HDMI to your Surface Book? The registry hack allowed the WMR app to finish setup but still not working.
  • I've used the CableMatters Active mini usb to HDMI connector, as well as the Gofanco Active mini usb to HDMI connector. Both work well. I've also tried the Microsoft mini usb to- HDMI connector as well, but on the surface pro 3.

  • Interesting that it works with just Intel integrated graphics, I'll try out watching a movie on my wife's surface pro 3 with big screen beta.
Works well, as expected, on my Alienware r17 with a nvidia GTX 1070.
