Hello everyone.

Why does my Surface Laptop display flash?

I have a Surface Laptop with Corei5 and the display starts to flash or flicker when I connect the HP HMD to my Surface Laptop. The app launches and the sound comes on but the display in the headset doesn't come on. Shouldn't this device work with Windows Mixed Reality Headsets? Thanks.

  • It's probably the adapter you are using for DisplayPort to HDMI. You need one that is considered Active, not Passive. Also, I think I saw something about it needing to be DisplayPort 2.1 compatible as well, not all adapters are.

  • Hi Kevin. I'm a Microsoft engineer on the Mixed Reality team. We have a page with information about recommended display adapters here: https://developer.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/mixed-reality/recommended_adapters_for_windows_mixed_reality_capable_pcs

  • I have the surface adapter, but I still get the same issue as above. The display on the surface laptop continues to flash, even when the sound comes on. But the headset (Lenovo Explorer) never does anything. Kevin, did you get yours working?

  • Hey Nstewy, another Microsoft Engineer here. A couple of suggestions:

    • Try plugging in the adapter to the PC before connecting the HMD to the adapter
    • Make sure you're not using any extension cables or hubs (plug everything directly into the PC)
    • Check to make sure the USB cable is plugged in a USB 3.0 or faster port. USB 3.0 ports have SS (Super Speed) written next to them. They are often (but not always) colored blue.

Let us know how it goes!

  • Thanks for the response, but none of these suggestions worked. I have everything plugged in locally to the surface book. When I plug the headset in it immediately starts flashing. Then I can hear the sound of the mixed reality start up and between the flashing I can see that the device says ready. It just continues to flash and nothing on the headset does anything. I have all the window updates and I have updated all the USB and graphics/display drivers.

  • Thanks for working with us to figure this out. Can you try to position the Performance Slider to “Best Performance”?

If that doesn't work, this page has some other debugging steps to try: https://developer.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/mixed-reality/troubleshooting_windows_mixed_reality#hmd_connectivity

Which Surface type (Pro, Laptop, Book) are you using? And what are the hardware specs?

Also, just to be absolutely certain you're using the Surface Mini DisplayPort to HDMI 2.0 Adapter, correct?

  • Hi folks,

I'm also an engineer working on Windows Mixed Reality at Microsoft. Just wanted to provide some more information.

For folks using the Microsoft Surface adapter, please double check which of the official Microsoft Mini DisplayPort to HDMI adapters you are using:

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/store/d/surface-mini-displayport-to-hdmi-20-adapter/8qj8ss92m2tl - this adapter is supported, as it supports HDMI 2.0 / 4K resolution
https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/store/d/surface-mini-displayport-to-hdmi-adapter/8q5dqkd29gxt - this adapter is not supported, as it only supports 1080p resolution

    Thanks!
