Hello everyone.

The Mixed Reality Forums here are no longer being used or maintained.

There are a few other places we would like to direct you to for support, both from Microsoft and from the community.

The first way we want to connect with you is our mixed reality developer program, which you can sign up for at https://aka.ms/IWantMR.

For technical questions, please use Stack Overflow, and tag your questions using either hololens or windows-mixed-reality.

If you want to join in discussions, please do so in the HoloDevelopers Slack, which you can join by going to https://aka.ms/holodevelopers, or in our Microsoft Tech Communities forums at https://techcommunity.microsoft.com/t5/mixed-reality/ct-p/MicrosoftMixedReality.

What exactly do i need for 3D hologram superimposition on a real object ? unity..vuforia ??

Hi everyone, i would like to know what tools (dev. tools) i need to install if i want to take a 3d object (.stl format) convert it to a hologram and then into the hololens to superimpose it on a real object. Most probably i would need to use spatial mapping because this object has to be superimposed accurately on the real object. I hope i can do this without markers. I am beginner so any detailed info is much appreciated.

  • A quick way to do it without posters is to allow the user to move the object into place.

You could start with TapToPlace (in the mixed reality toolkit) to get it close and then you could fine tune the placement by allowing the user to drag its location with a manipulation gesture or perhaps just nudge it using audio commands.

I think Vuforia does also have a 3D object recognition but the object would need to be pretty easily recognizable by the device for that to work. But that may also be worth exploring.

  • So do you recommend Vuforia over Unity for that purpose ?

  • Not necessarily. I'd probably start with manually placing it and go from there:
