A limited number of customers have reported an issue installing or running Windows Mixed Reality after a voluntary recent update (16299.251). We’ve removed the update that caused this problem. Most Windows 10 customers were not impacted, but for the few that were a fix for this issue was included in cumulative update KB4088776.

    To resolve your issue:
    1. Select the Start **button, and then go to **Settings > Update & security > Windows Update and select Check for updates. Install KB4088776. Alternatively, you can manually install the cumulative update at http://www.catalog.update.microsoft.com/Search.aspx?q=KB4088776.
    2. Restart Windows.
    3. Launch the Mixed Reality Portal to complete setup.

Glad to see that this update has been removed. I was getting pretty tired of having it continue to try to install itself, failing, then restarting to go back.

I then just needed to use the windows update trouble shooter to get rid of this and now my windows update says everything is up to date again.

Fortunately because it never actually installed, I did not notice any problems with WMR. Well, no more than usual anyway, lol!

Edit; I should not have spoken so soon! After I posted this I tried to launch a game using SteamVR for windows and my Dell headset went blank when the game started. I then downloaded and ran the Fix ( and did a restart) and everything seems ok now. Maybe some of the problem update components had actually installed? Who knows?

  • Now they have issued a new update, omg!

  • And, what a surprise, the new cum update KB4088776 also causes my WMR Dell headset to go black screen after +10 minutes use. Man this is getting frustrating!

  • After many restarts and reinstallation of WMR it all appears to be working ok once again. There is a possibility that SteamVR was partially to blame. They came out with and update soon after I reported this problem. Who knows?

  • Now it has started to black out after ~10 minutes WMR usage. Just about to toss WMR for good!
