Hello everyone.

The Mixed Reality Forums here are no longer being used or maintained.

There are a few other places we would like to direct you to for support, both from Microsoft and from the community.

The first way we want to connect with you is our mixed reality developer program, which you can sign up for at https://aka.ms/IWantMR.

For technical questions, please use Stack Overflow, and tag your questions using either hololens or windows-mixed-reality.

If you want to join in discussions, please do so in the HoloDevelopers Slack, which you can join by going to https://aka.ms/holodevelopers, or in our Microsoft Tech Communities forums at https://techcommunity.microsoft.com/t5/mixed-reality/ct-p/MicrosoftMixedReality.

And always feel free to hit us up on Twitter @MxdRealityDev.

What Happens When You Pair HoloLens With Kinect?

We have been researching how to extend the capiblities of the Hololens and break down the barriers of mixed reality. Here is our latest project pairing Hololens with the Kinect.

    Very cool indeed!
How did you match the coordinate systems of the HoloLens and Kinect?
    In a clever automatic way?

  • I think it more Hololens and XBOX Scorpio and its (Kinect module) is the key in MS Plan.

    I'm curious too. :)

Thanks for explaining, and cool project!

  • If Microsoft has already provided developers with the access to the raw depth data, it was unnecessary to pair HoloLens with Kinect.

I like to hear from Microsoft an official declaration of the plan to provide developers with the access to the raw depth data.

  • @CurvSurf, it is true that exposing the raw depth data would extend the capabilities of HoloLens. However, a external Kinect provides an addition viewpoint of the room. This gives us information in areas that are not directly visible in a HoloLens users frontal view.

  • That's pretty amazing. If you could also pair that up with one of those tesla suits. You could do even more amazing things. https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/247607504/teslasuit-feel-what-you-play?ref=discovery

  • @ekahler, I agree with you.

But, there is a large difference in works with/without raw depth data.

HoloLens shows a solid motion tracking supported by Kalman filtering and multiple cameras. It would be perfect, if raw depth data are available.

Without raw depth data by HoloLens:

  • Hi,

Would it be possible to export a WorldAnchor from the HoloLens to the server and then import it with the Kinect?
