Hello everyone.

The Mixed Reality Forums here are no longer being used or maintained.

There are a few other places we would like to direct you to for support, both from Microsoft and from the community.

The first way we want to connect with you is our mixed reality developer program, which you can sign up for at https://aka.ms/IWantMR.

For technical questions, please use Stack Overflow, and tag your questions using either hololens or windows-mixed-reality.

If you want to join in discussions, please do so in the HoloDevelopers Slack, which you can join by going to https://aka.ms/holodevelopers, or in our Microsoft Tech Communities forums at https://techcommunity.microsoft.com/t5/mixed-reality/ct-p/MicrosoftMixedReality.

And always feel free to hit us up on Twitter @MxdRealityDev.

How far "away" can holographic images be "projected"?

There would be issues of resolution and registration, as well as spacial mapping.

  • As much as possible. I wanted to post my thoughts on it and about it. There are only 24 hours a day...

  • From practical point of view, the max distance for "virtual" content is more than enough.

But there are limits... The hardware for one - usually view frustum has near and far clipping to make sure the Z-buffer has reasonable resolution. Also most apps use 32-bit floats so floating point precision will come into play at some point.

Also if the app anticipates the user to move large distance some form of LOD system could be needed with mesh loading on demand with some decent memory system as the 900 MB quickly gets used.

Anyway, I have a hint the question is about something else?

  • Spatial mapping is related (now) to wifi spaces. With Access Points, u can have the spatial space in large sizes.
I agree on the above post's point of memory size. But, also the space size can be enhanced by smartly managing the "Space" by shrinking every where except at the Camera location or point of vision.
