You're right! Actors like George Takei (and a lot of the holograms seen in the Holograms app and Actiongram) are filmed on our holographic capture stage that actually turns people into 360 degree video that looks real, because it is real! As of now, there's not really a cost-effective way to do this at home with that level of quality... a lot of tech is required. Some companies, like us, rent their stage out to people interested in creating content, but it wouldn't be easy to replicate at home.
