Turn an image into a hologram
Hey all, I am trying to figure out how HoloLens learns information. I am wanting to try and create an experience where if someone wearing the HL is walking through a dealership, information about the cars can popup as they look at them. If they choose they can stop and find out more detailed about the particular vehicle.

If you want to take a physical object and make a hologram of it then that will require a fair amount of work. Here's a video of how we're creating Holograms of people and objects. Here's another video.
If you want to literally make a hologram out of a photograph...that probably isn't feasible.

I think some people have used OpenCV and April Tags (similar to QR codes). This isn't something that I've done personally, but the idea is to find an April Tag using the webcam and place some hologram where the April Tag is found. So in the car dealership you could put an April Tag sticker on the window of a car, and users with a HoloLens could see the pricing information.

Thank you so much Patrick. If I wanted to take it a step further and take that one car and turn into a HL object where the customer can change colors, wheels, etc, how easy is it to turn a photo into a hologram?
That would require a bit more work because you would need to precisely place the April Tags on the car so when you rendered the new color/wheels or whatever, they are rendered in the correct place in the world relative to the car.

Right, but if I wanted to convert that car, or any object/picture into hologram...is that a lot of work from your knowledge?

Thank you for all your help!
The beta Vuforia plugin for Unity could be a candidate you may want to check out.
