Hello everyone.

The Mixed Reality Forums here are no longer being used or maintained.

There are a few other places we would like to direct you to for support, both from Microsoft and from the community.

The first way we want to connect with you is our mixed reality developer program, which you can sign up for at https://aka.ms/IWantMR.

For technical questions, please use Stack Overflow, and tag your questions using either hololens or windows-mixed-reality.

If you want to join in discussions, please do so in the HoloDevelopers Slack, which you can join by going to https://aka.ms/holodevelopers, or in our Microsoft Tech Communities forums at https://techcommunity.microsoft.com/t5/mixed-reality/ct-p/MicrosoftMixedReality.

And always feel free to hit us up on Twitter @MxdRealityDev.

State of Multi-tasking

Id just like some clarification on the state of Windows multitasking on the Hololens;

  1. Only one active UWP is possible at a time. That is, its currently impossible to chat with someone on Skype while doing something else.
    In other words "Walk _or _Chew gum"
  2. Only 3 UWP, even paused, are possible to be open at a time.
  3. Only 1 true 3d holographic app can be open at a time, which will hide all UWP windows. (so you cant Skype while using a 3d app either).

I got this information from browsing this forum, so I am not sure if its upto date or accurate. So a simple confirmation or denial would be useful.
Additionally, is there a roadmap or information if any of this is planned to be changed in future?

Thanks,
Thomas - AR evangelist.

    wait...is #1 really right?
    This video shows 3 x 2d apps seemingly all active (not paused) at the same time;
    https://youtu.be/XM5OHHrOGqQ

    Did functionality regress, or is that still possible. Its certainly more what I expect from windows.

    Also, where is the hololens update/release notes generally released?
    Is this the site for that;
    https://developer.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/holographic/release_notes ?
    Or is there a better site?

    Thanks.

    You can have a heap of 2D applications open. But their active behaviour as a bit weird/poorly documented. I have had 3 running exactly as shown in the picture but in some cases after a period of time one of the applications will go to sleep and but I am not sure what causes this.

    Well, thanks for clarifying the unclarity.

    I guess theres so many vectors to hololens OS development improvements some aspects (like documentation) get left behind.

    @ThomasWrobel
    Have you looked at the bottom of the page that you linked to in the prior release notes section?

    The multitasking functionality was added in the May 2016 update and is mentioned as the first item in the new features section.

    What is your current unclarity?

    If you ask me the HoloLens team is doing a rather impressive job at documentation. Sure, like anything it could be improved, but I have seen a lot worse from other groups, products and companies.

    To be clear, nothing I said was a specific criticism, I understand the difficulties of this stuff.

    For my questions, I was just trying to confirm or refute information found on this forum about the state of things.

    It seems that while there is a limit of 3 apps, they should all be able to run at once correct?
    And whatever Peter_NZ is experiencing is unintentional/bug at the moment.
