Device Portal Connection over USB on non-development system
Hi,
we have encountered the situation in which people in the organisation need to install a prototype of an HoloLens app without having access to a development system which has all the development tools installed. Is there a lightweight-way, or a minimal set of tools (not the whole dev bunch) which can be installed to connect to the Device Portal on the HoloLens through USB so as to install an app?
Regards
Yves

If you're running Windows 10 with the anniversary update you can turn your laptop in to a mobile hotspot and have the HoloLens connect to that. This way you are not dependent on customers wifi.

You should be able to connect any computer to the device portal without the use of any tools. You should just need to connect to 127.0.0.1:10080 while connected via USB, and the device portal should show up. Make sure you add the port number or it will fail. They will need to login for the device portal, but you should be good to go with that.
Looks like you do need an additional tool. IpOverUSBSvc.exe needs to be running. It is a service which seems to be linked to phone development. A 'Windows IP Over USB-x86_en-us.msi' comes with the download of the Windows 10 SDK.

Have you tried installing the HoloLens companion app from the Windows Store onto your Windows 10 PC?
It provides very similar functionality to the Device Portal.

I'll check it out. Nevertheless I guess the PC and HoloLens somehow have to communicate and if Wifi is not an option (e.g. at customer facilities) this might be a problem too.
