Hello everyone.

We have decided to phase out the Mixed Reality Forums over the next few months in favor of other ways to connect with us.

The first way we want to connect with you is our mixed reality developer program, which you can sign up for at https://aka.ms/IWantMR.

The plan between now and the beginning of May is to clean up old, unanswered questions that are no longer relevant. The forums will remain open and usable.

On May 1st we will be locking the forums to new posts and replies. They will remain available for another three months for the purposes of searching them, and then they will be closed altogether on August 1st.

So, where does that leave our awesome community to ask questions? Well, there are a few places we want to engage with you. For technical questions, please use Stack Overflow, and tag your questions using either hololens or windows-mixed-reality. If you want to join in discussions, please do so in the HoloDevelopers Slack, which you can join by going to https://aka.ms/holodevelopers. And always feel free to hit us up on Twitter @MxdRealityDev.

Is it possible to cast my laptop's screen or camera's stream on hololens?

I know that it's possible to cast the user's point of view on other screen, but what if

  1. I want to cast my laptop's screen on hololens? (the other way around)

  2. Can I connect a video stream of some camera(from a http ip address) on to hololens?

  3. If yes, can I map the movement of user's head to navigate camera left and right if the camera has capability to move left and right?

I am at a very initial stage of my project, so just trying to know about possibilities.

Not looking for exact solution on "how to", just the possibilities for "can we".

  • @chiddaan I'm def interested in an answer to this. I want to bring in IP cameras but not sure Hololens has the processing power. Love to see if there's an example of this.

  • Hey, I was able to stream GoPro Hero 3 ( which supports streaming over IP)

I downloaded IP Camera app from store(orange background and black camera with white wifi signal in it) and gave it the URL, it worked just fine.

And hololens has amazing processing power :P just saying

    2. Can I connect a video stream of some camera(from a http ip address) on to hololens?

Can't these be done via the Skype app?

    1. If yes, can I map the movement of user's head to navigate camera left and right if the camera has capability to move left and right?

Wouldn't it be easier to stream a 360 camera which is constantly fliming in all directions?

  • @Ash

I got the http streaming to work from GoPro Hero3, And sure, skype could be used. Thanks.

That's a very good thought regarding the 360 camera, but it doesn't have optical zoom, so that's a deal-breaker for me.
