Hello everyone.

We have decided to phase out the Mixed Reality Forums over the next few months in favor of other ways to connect with us.

The first way we want to connect with you is our mixed reality developer program, which you can sign up for at https://aka.ms/IWantMR.

The plan between now and the beginning of May is to clean up old, unanswered questions that are no longer relevant. The forums will remain open and usable.

On May 1st we will be locking the forums to new posts and replies. They will remain available for another three months for the purposes of searching them, and then they will be closed altogether on August 1st.

So, where does that leave our awesome community to ask questions? Well, there are a few places we want to engage with you. For technical questions, please use Stack Overflow, and tag your questions using either hololens or windows-mixed-reality. If you want to join in discussions, please do so in the HoloDevelopers Slack, which you can join by going to https://aka.ms/holodevelopers. And always feel free to hit us up on Twitter @MxdRealityDev.

  • Hi @DiegoV,
I am not very familiar with the networking options available (I typically use built-in solutions like the one provided in HoloToolkit), but if you are using Unity, then you will not be able to use the .Net 4.5 framework. Unity only supports up to 3.5 at this time.

  • Hi @ahillier ,
I am using unity just for 3d modelling, then I use universal app
  • Hi @ahillier and @DiegoV ,

I have been wondering about this mono 3.5 vs UWP 4.5 in Unity for a while and just stumbled across the following interesting nugget in the Unity docs:

Unlike other Unity platforms, Windows Store is not using .NET 3.5 Class Libraries profile, but rather a subset of .NET 4.5. This is due to Windows Store certification requirements. This means that the platform has some incompatibilities compared to other platforms...

Now that comes from the older 5.3 version of the docs for unity and the 5.4b link doesn't seem to have an updated version of that yet. Of course the HoloLens branch 5.4b10,b14 may differ in some way yet again. But that does start to explain how they are creating a UWP compatible app even though the main Unity platform is based on mono which is still locked on 3.5.

So @DiegoV, not sure which apis are in their particular subset variant of 4.5 but it sounds like the had to meet some bar for Store compatibility.
