How might this portal? effect have been accomplished?

In this video there's an animated window that opens revealing what appears to be a skybox.

Is it a typical portal accomplished via camera view rendered to texture? Perhaps it doesn't appear to be as taxing because the real world isn't rendered?

    It's very similar to how the origami project blows a hole in the floor to reveal the world below. If you place your origami scene above the floor, you can get the same effect, where you can go through the hole into the other world behind....

    I looked into it a little bit more, and it seems he's using a combination of the origami underworld and the stencil shader in Unity. Basically just has the real world mesh and a skybox. Tapping a floor or wall on the real world mesh renders the skybox behind it via Unity's stencil shader. (That's at least half of the technique.)

    Then from there he may be using the origami technique of disabling/enabling the meshes on collision with the openings.
