Required Renderer Component of ColorPickerExample

I have just downloaded the HoloToolkit-Unity package and started at the ColorPickerExample scene.

Running inside Unity and building to device throws an "UnassignedReferenceException" error, which leads to the discovery that a Renderer is required to be assigned to the "Renderer Component" field!

I wondered what game object to drag onto this field whose renderer can be used for this purpose, and then from the attached script, I figured out it should be the Picker game object which is the child of the ColorPickerCanvas. Is this correct?

Also, assuming that the above is right, upon gazing at the picker palette, the color gazed-at shows in the PreviewColor box, but nothing is going on in the SelectedColor box when I tap on a gazed-at color. Why is that?
