Viewing hololens from external screen during demo

I would wish to make it possible to see what the user of a hololens see in an external screen. during a demo session.

I found an app called hololens companion but when I tried to download it to my windows 10 PC from https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/store/p/microsoft-hololens/9nblggh4qwnx, nothing happens . I did notice in a thread that it is available in github. But I need a built version since I do not have the development environment to build it. Can anyone give some advice as to how i should move on ?

Here are some instructions I found on how to use and install the HoloLens Companion app.

    https://vbandi.net/2016/08/18/hololens-mixed-reality-streaming-done-right/

The biggest requirement you really need is the ability to deploy a hotspot with your PC. So if you have a laptop or Windows Surface then it typically has this functionality built in. I use the app so it definitely works.

You can also connect to the Device Portal through a web browser and stream from there but, there is about a 3 to 4 second lag compared to about a half of a second lag using the HoloLens Companion app.

Hi , i think my first concern is that I am unable to download the companion app even though I have windows 10. The download app button is enabled but nothing happens when I press it.

Check and make sure that you meet the minimum requirements for the application. Open the Windows Store, Search for HoloLens, once you are on the application info page scroll down until you see requirements if there are not two green checkmarks by them then you don't meet the minimum requirements.

If that's not the case then, I would try on another PC if you have one.

If that still doesn't work you can look at using the Device Portal for your HoloLens.
The documentation for setting it up can be found here:

I do not see any green checkmarks at all besides requirements section.
Will take a look at the device portal.

It should look something like this.

OK. The text is the same but i do not get any green checkmarks besides the specifications. Btw, i found https://blog.kloud.com.au/2016/09/01/streaming-hololens-video-to-your-web-browser/ which is alittle easier for me to understand as to how to get the streaming going then your link https://developer.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/mixed-reality/using_the_windows_device_portal (even if this was referred to in the blog entry). Are there any special requirements on the windows 10 PC which I will do the streaming from ?

No I don't believe so. All you need is a web browser on your computer and type in the HoloLens's IP address.

Hi everyone, i got the device portal working but one cannot see the app like holotour. Is it because the app is not based on holograms ?

  • Options

You should be able to capture anything that is displayed to the user. On the Mixed Reality Capture page, there are a couple of fields at the top of the page, these are the different settings you can have when recording or previewing while the camera is on. In order to enable Holograms, make sure that the Holograms field is checked.

All the option fields were checked on except the audio part (mic and app). The holotour is not always holograms since I experience it more as a virtual reality app. Could it be due to that ?
