Hello everyone.

The Mixed Reality Forums here are no longer being used or maintained.

There are a few other places we would like to direct you to for support, both from Microsoft and from the community.

The first way we want to connect with you is our mixed reality developer program, which you can sign up for at https://aka.ms/IWantMR.

For technical questions, please use Stack Overflow, and tag your questions using either hololens or windows-mixed-reality.

If you want to join in discussions, please do so in the HoloDevelopers Slack, which you can join by going to https://aka.ms/holodevelopers, or in our Microsoft Tech Communities forums at https://techcommunity.microsoft.com/t5/mixed-reality/ct-p/MicrosoftMixedReality.

And always feel free to hit us up on Twitter @MxdRealityDev.

best first purchase option

AS I understand it there are 2 possible purchase options including (developer, and commercial).

Based on our need and upgrade path I am hoping you might provide a bit of guidance in terms of what kit would be the best way for us to proceed.

Currently, our plan is to create an experience that we can physically bring to and demonstrate to a client. We will want this demonstration to be as smooth as possible, having to manipulate screens of settings etc. in front of a potential customer won’t really help sell the smoothness of the experience.

I do not know if the developer edition will facilitate this smooth experience. As I understand it the only true smooth experience might be accomplished using Kiosk mode. This mode appears to only be available in the enterprise/commercial package. This seems a bit strange to me if the goal of the developer kit is to develop content which will help sell the device, but maybe I am not understanding the purpose of the packages correctly.

Based on the above scenario would you suggest the developer kit as an entry point, or will we need to invest in the other edition to achieve our objective. At this time we have no need for the security, the Windows store for business, multiple device managers etc.. I would hope and anticipate that pending client buy in, we may need to upgrade our suite in order to better manage multiple headsets but initially that would not be required. Is there any sort of upgrade path if the developer kit is purchased to the commercial suite without having to purchase it as a second full priced product?

Thank you for any input on these questions or suggestions in a direction that I should move towards. any feedback including your experience in making your first purchase, satisfaction or regret over picking the wrong package is also appreciated.

thank you.

There is no difference between the two devices other than commercial features and the licensing agreement. So the experience is the same other than kiosk mode but for demo purposes just turn on your app and hand it over :).
I believe that you cannot use a dev device on a client project. The legal stuff is pretty weird, maybe somebody from Microsoft can answer this better but my understanding is that on a client project, they have to supply the commercial device for you to work on. As for development without client, developer version is fine.
