Surface Dial may be a nice accessory than a clicker to hololens
in Discussion
It will be an interesting option for gestures like zoom or moving the holograms. Menu management. Or swiftkey for typing if not with Bluetooth keyboard.
keep it inside pocket or on your side.
Always it can be clicked.
Bring the items(holograms/Menus) behind you by dialing.

Why not just let everyone tether their pre-existing devices to it,
like smartphones?
Most people are already very good at typing with a smartphone.
@HoloDevices @AlanFoster I was recently exploring what the best virtual keyboard for the HoloLens device is... and it led me to a similar conclusion as HoloDevices... A virtual keyboard with "Virtual/Holographic Surface Dial Display" seems ideal to me for the specific reason of keyboard shortcut functionality and display capabilities. Have either of you seen a "Virtual/Holographic Surface Dial Display?"
...Maybe a great development project.

Please feel encouraged to elaborate on the discussion.
Thank you.

I had my HoloLens at GDC, we attempted to get the Surface dial working with it. It connected but that was it.
@subere23
Thank you for sharing your experience.
Your insights are valued greatly.
I am really excited by the opportunity to integrate a "Virtual/Holographic Surface Dial Display" with the HoloLens.
To the best of my knowledge this is something that must come from within Microsoft... but I'll keep researching...
Additionally once an interface is developed the opportunity for modification and customization increases significantly with virtual (holographic) display.
