Hello everyone.
The Mixed Reality Forums here are no longer being used or maintained.
There are a few other places we would like to direct you to for support, both from Microsoft and from the community.
The first way we want to connect with you is our mixed reality developer program, which you can sign up for at https://aka.ms/IWantMR.
For technical questions, please use Stack Overflow, and tag your questions using either hololens or windows-mixed-reality.
If you want to join in discussions, please do so in the HoloDevelopers Slack, which you can join by going to https://aka.ms/holodevelopers, or in our Microsoft Tech Communities forums at https://techcommunity.microsoft.com/t5/mixed-reality/ct-p/MicrosoftMixedReality.
And always feel free to hit us up on Twitter @MxdRealityDev.

How to make an inactive app appear as 3d widget in the shell instead of a flat quad?
Edge

Is this possible by Unity? By default, after bloom out from the app's holographic view, it will become an inactive flat quad. How can I make it appear as a 3d widget?
Moreover, by Unity, is it possible to make the app appear as 3d widget (instead of immersive holographic view) when activated? Just like the weather widget showed early last year?
Thanks.

Hey @Edge,
Tiles are currently limited to showing 2D images, as the APIs for creating 3D widgets are not yet available. See this document for more information:

Also, be sure to send feedback through the Windows Feedback app to help us prioritize this work.
Thanks!

Hi @ahillier ,
Thanks for your reply! Just want to double check. For what I understand, tiles refer to app icons in the start menu. How about apps we've already placed in the room? As in the attached screenshot, is it possible to make a Unity app appear as 3d widget when inactive just like the Earth in the screenshot below instead of 2d panel such as the Setting app:
Same question. It looks like it's not available to the public yet though, as not even Galaxy Explorer has one.
I would love to have this kind of API
If you managed to do that in the emulator, then it should be possible.
Hi @mtycholaz,
The 3D globe in the image above is from the Holograms app. Unfortunately, the APIs that are used by that application have not been made public yet. We have marked this as a feature request for the HoloLens product team to enable for developers.
@ahiller any ETA for this feature (like "this year" or "next year" at least)?
Greetings, mods. Is this still the case a few months later?
Yea.. we need this. At least let us use a static fbx in the manifest as an icon or something.
Any news on this topic?
Hello All,
Any news on this topic?
Thanks,
Ankit Sangani
The API's are available for the mixed-reality VR experiences but they are not yet available in the version of Windows running on the HoloLens:

Any updates on this? Just got to borrow a hololens and would love to place my own app as 3D icon in my living room
Awesome device btw!

Seems like this should be possible now: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/mixed-reality/implementing-3d-app-launchers
