Are there instructions somewhere on how to reflash the units?

What do you mean by reflash? As in, recover back to the OOBE? If so, this is the link for you. https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/13452/hololens-restart-reset-or-recover-hololens

The recovery tool will be updated if you have a version that doesn't support it. The startup screen looks like this if the HoloLens is detected.
