Hi everyone,
I just built and published a Universal App to help you determine the IPD of a person based on a selfie and a control image.
This should help anyone that does not have a pupilometer available or don't have the time to run the HoloLens calibration tool (fast pace environment, like a conference or demo).
The app uses the Microsoft Face API from the Cognitive Services suite and will give pretty good results (+/- 2mm) which is pretty amazing for a 10 second operation.
Project is available free and opensource for anyone who wants to contribute and feedback is always welcome. Some of the limitations are listed in the issues section

That's quite interesting. I suppose it's in Microsoft's best interest to stick with the slower but more accurate method, as it will yield the best experience. However, if a quicker method can be so near the most accurate value, the trade off in user experience may be worth it. As developers we understand and will go through the long process, but you know when it hits consumers hands they'll take shortcuts because they want to jump right it.
To be honest (and I will need other people to confirm as well, not just me) my tool has been more accurate than the built-in calibration tool and significantly faster.

Thanks for sharing. Anecdotally, I found the built in process wasn't terribly accurate for me. Gave me a result 4mm smaller than what I got from the optical measurement tool.
