As a 3DSMax user trying to learn Maya, my recommendation, all other considerations aside, would be to use what you know.
Going in fresh with no knowledge or existing licenses, you might want to check out Blender, which is open-source.
Depending on what you want to do, one program may be better than another. If, for example, I was interested in building HoloLens apps for architectural design then I'd prefer 3DSMax or AutoCAD over Maya. Probably the opposite if you're thinking games or more cinematic work. For manufacturing or industrial product design, I like Fusion 360 because it also has great workflows for other aspects of manufacturing like 3D printing.
Good luck!

If I created a 3D Product, how could I see it through my Hololens?
@dwhololens Download the 3D Viewer (Beta) application for viewing *.FBX files.

@Jason Thank you for the quick response, I am currently using Fusion 360 to create a product in which I would like to use HoloLens to demonstrate, however, is there a program that is widely used at the moment to create .FBX files over Fusion 360?
@dwhololens Hi, I'm fairly new to 3D modelling myself however I too have discovered that there are many different options for software (both open source and licensed).
The applications that I have started investigating are ZBrush, Blender, 3ds Max, and MakeHuman. There are also architectural specific software applications (Chief Architecture -> however you have to export as a 3ds file from Chief Architecture into 3D Max and convert to FBX format).
I'm currently looking to export FBX models from ZBrush into Unity directly.
Again, thank you for all your help!
@dwhololens You're very welcome. My efforts present time are more exploratory in nature to understand application capability and to gain a familiarity of the software options that exist for various use cases.
I work in Healthcare and am looking at hooking into DICOM data from medical imaging devices to render 3D models through a mixed reality medium.

I also see advantages using Vuforia for object recognition/ image replacement.
Well I am working through 3D Program Trials (so far Fusion 360) to try and create my workflow path that best fits my efforts. Traditionally I am use to video editing and the combination/marriage of Adobe Premiere, After Effects, and Photoshop. I am hoping to create a similar workflow. If I experience anything that may be useful too I will definitely share it your way!
